Jim's colour blindness is an unusual quirk for an artist
Jim is an artist and the designer/founder of the homewares company Newgate World. Born and raised in Oswestry he now lives in the neighbouring town of Shrewsbury.
His medium is oil on canvas and he likes to work in large format. Jim also produces a range of limited edition digital prints.
His artistic focus is currently that of the female form and anatomy. Experimenting with form and shape, his playful observations and interpretations are intended to amuse our curiosity. Jim plans for this explorative work to continue through different incarnations and series introducing new styles, techniques and materials.
Jim's love of art started at secondary school with the guidance of an inspirational art teacher. He went on to study art at college but was frustrated and disillusioned with a lacklustre culture and apathetic tutors. He was subsequently kicked out for his deteriorating interest and behaviour. He used his inherently good eye for stylish design to create a homewares business that would get him started in life. He has gone on to create several universally recognised brands of decorative clocks, watches and now eyewear. In 2010 Jim began his exploration of the female form through oil on canvas.
Unusually for an artist Jim is colour blind. Note his use of primary colour in his latter collection, apparently a reaction to the low impedance of his colour recognition. While Jim does see this series in full technicolour, he undoubtedly sees this series of paintings differently to you and I.
